Teacher preparation workshops for the development of communication skills in 3- and 4-years old children
Abstract
The development of communication skills in early childhood is a fundamental step in the holistic development of human beings, laying the foundation not only for the acquisition of oral language, but also for the structuring of thought, emotional regulation, socialization, and future academic learning. This article aims to propose workshops to prepare teachers for the development of communication skills in 3- and 4-year-old children at the "24 de Mayo" Educational Unit. A qualitative approach was adopted, employing theoretical methods such as analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive, and structural-functional systemic approaches, and empirical methods including participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis of the Early Childhood Education curriculum. The sample consisted of 4 teachers, 40 parents and/or legal guardians, and 40 children from the second level of early childhood education. The initial assessment of the study population revealed limitations in the strategies used by teachers to stimulate communication and a lack of pedagogical intent in daily interactions, highlighting the need to prepare teachers to enrich the learning process and ensure the children's holistic development. Workshops are proposed to prepare teachers to develop communicative skills in young children through motivating and differentiated teaching strategies. The proposal was validated by expert review and found to be relevant and feasible for implementation in early childhood education settings.
